Mistaken Identity

In the beginning
I created
God
Out of the dust of my life
HE, I created Him
(SHE was a temptress)
Dribs
Drabs
I used
A little bit of
My father’s distance
My grandfather’s silence
My sister’s rage
My mother’s literalism and moralism
Father church, of course, helped
With the work ethic
Original badness
Sacrifice required
Avoiding THEM out there in the world.

Enter Jesus, stage left,
(I didn’t create him)
With Paul and Augustine’s help
I let him become a cheap magician
Doing a trick, a little sleight of hand
Substituting his King of Hearts for my Jack of Spades
How did he do that?
(He had it up his theologic sleeve, right side).

I let the results guy, Bill Bright, tell me
God had a wonderful plan for my life
But
I have to get off the Throne of my life
And disappear
Let Jesus parachute onto it
There’s a plan but I’m not part of it.

In the stick diagram
The throne looks like a toilet.

I’m told what Jesus really said
Quietly
Hardly heard over all the hoo-ha, was:

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
For I am gentle and humble of spirit,
And you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”

  1. Wonderfully put Douglas. I certainly saw myself in the mirror. I really liked the comparison of the “stick” drawing of my life’s throne as a toilet. The concept of SHE as a feminine idea of the Divine as a Temptress was shockingly true. The biggest truth for me was your description of how we, with similar upbringing, have created our own god. Very poignant, Douglas, and thank you for your beautiful insight.
